Duvel #2 update
Posted: June 13th, 2008 | Author: Stacy | Filed under: Duvel, Homebrew | 4 Comments »The duvel I brewed last weekend is behaving normally, and took about 5 days to develop any fermentation activity. Whew, just as I’ve come to expect! I think that the previous batch started fermenting earlier because I pitched the yeast when the wort was at around 74 degrees. For the second batch, I pitched the yeast at 68 degrees. I used the same brand of yeast for both. What a difference pitching temperature makes! Now I’ll have to see if the flavor and quality of the beers are different.
Hi,
Just curious to know, are you using the supplied yeast packet from Brewferm, or a liquid yeast?
I use liquid yeast, either Wyeast or White Labs depending on style and what’s available. When I’m using a kit as a base I often find that the dry yeast that comes with the kit is at or near expiration.
That said, the very first beer I ever made (Irish Stout) used the dry yeast and it came out just fine! Just look at the expiration date on the packet before you pitch it in your beer-to-be.
Stacey: Can you recommend the beer kit or ingrediants you used to make your Duvel…I can’t find anything anywhere…of course I am somewhat new to beermaking, but love Duvel. Did you add any coriander, orange peel, or anything else to your beer?
I used Brewferm’s Diablo hopped malt extract kit as a base, and my only other addition was honey. Pretty simple! If there isn’t a brewing supply store near you, you might be able to find the kits online. carries it, and so does Heart’s Homebrew. I’ve never bought from either, but it’s a start.
When I made a Grand Cru, I added coriander and orange peel. It turned out very nicely!
