I tried brewing an Oktoberfest Marzen a few years back and made the mistake of not fermenting in the colder temperatures that lager yeast needs. We figured this out when fermentation was crazy slow and the beer came out tasting like pears. Seriously, pears. I've stuck with ale home brews since and have been nervous about lagers.
